XTZ 9936 MKII Walnut / High-End speaker with modern design

From the beginning, when the first XTZ 99.36 was developed, the resulting quality of the loudspeaker had a greater importance than the cost. Those days we claimed that, with the right skills and production volume, it must be possible to obtain true High End quality without ending up with a price so high that only a few people can afford it.

Our goal was:

* Components at the highest possible mechanical quality
* Relatively small cabinet
* Timeless and clean design
* Very flexible with lots of adjustment options

The 99.36 model was born! The features we managed to realize from the first series on were a lot!

Over the years the 99.36 became a huge success, as very few other speakers on the market offer a similar price/quality ratio. Then, in 2011, we went beyond: It was time to take a look at one of our best speakers to check if we could get it even better! Time had come for the new, further optimized 99.36MKII model.

The new 99.36MKII version has got updated crossover filters, optimized for the best possible performance in terms of phase linearity and frequency response. Just like its predecessor, the new model is equipped with SEAS Excel High End drivers, providing an absolutely clean and transparent sound. 60 years of experience supports these drivers.

It also features a ribbon tweeter to ensure a superior transient response and very flat frequency response. For the 99.36 MKII, we carefully selected all components. The goal was to offer a top end floor standing speaker with a minimum of coloring, and with a finish normally not found in this price range.
Developing the new version we had the goal to further optimize phase response, obtain even flatter frequency response, reduce distortion at a physically possible minimum, optimize tweeter and bass adjustments, and, last but not least, optimize impedance for being easily powered! In short terms, we asked the impossible to our developers:

When Olle (Mr. Eliasson, president of XTZ) called me, as usual for him it was more night than evening, initially I was quite surprised, then a little embarrassed: he asked me if we could work on the 99.36 model, he told me it was time to think about a MKII version. He asked if we could improve the speaker. When he told me what he expected, I told him it would be a quite hard job to do, as I remembered that speaker being really good, especially at the price point. As I expected a long working period I told him immediately it wouldn’t be “economic”, but he was decided to do it. For me it was exactly that kind of challenge I love, so I accepted! During the following months we developed one of the most complex and tricky crossover networks I ever built for a series production speaker. When, after three months of hard work (together with my technician), the final filter was built up, we ran the first listening sessions under real-life conditions. I remember that day a couple of customers being present, they participated and couldn’t believe their ears: those speakers were better than anything else at prices even way higher. They were convinced the price was around 6 or 7 k-Euros! I have to admit, it was an incredible satisfaction for me, I think I can proudly say there isn’t any comparable speaker at this price on the market. The only problem I had at this point was to convince Olle to use that filter- it was really complex, needed very high quality components with huge air-coils and lowest tolerance capacitors, I feared it was simply too expensive to realize. Actually we discussed a little bit.. and, my fault, the new version got a little more expensive. But he did it, and the MKII model was born!”

Technical presentation:

The 99.36MKII is a 2.5 way construction with internal crossover filter.
The cabinet is built using a narrow front - not only an aesthetically neat shape, but also an advantage from an acoustic point of view, as it provides a stable construction to keep resonances to a minimum.
We have used 25 mm MDF with several internal stability bars to obtain top stability. The midrange and woofers use separate chambers. This way, we have been able to optimize the chamber volumes for the midrange and bass drivers. Also, the midrange driver can operate without any interference from the woofer.

Tweeter:

We selected a ribbon tweeter with superior transient response and a very flat frequency response. Ribbon tweeters are frequently used in high end speakers.
The ribbon foil is super light and only 18 microns thin. It is a rosin-alloy-rosin sandwich construction that has been hardened at 320 degrees Celsius.
The magnet system is a two-row highly efficient neodymium construction in a molded chassis of ceramic carbon steel.
Fishbone shaped contactors in alloy provide a low connection resistance and good heat dissipation.
The driver has a high power capacity and handles frequencies up to 40000 Hz which makes it DVD-Audio and SACD-
ready.

Woofer/Midrange driver:

After evaluating a large number of drivers from different manufacturers we selected one from Seas, a company that has a solid reputation in the area of high quality speaker drivers. You can find Seas drivers in many High End speakers, even with 6 figure price tags. With 60 years of experience, they have cutting edge knowledge that puts most of the competition behind.

For the woofer/midrange we decided for a 6,5" magnesium driver from the Seas Excel series that guarantees extremely clean performance. We claim that, for this application, finding a better 6,5" driver on the market is a very difficult task.
The surface treated magnesium cone is extremely light, but is still extremely stiff and in the same time effectively reduces resonances.
The rubber surrounding makes sure that no edge resonances are present.

The molded metal basket is a "high flow" type that is acoustically transparent and has high precision since the basket is shaped exactly due to the molding process. This makes sure that the basket is very stable and efficiently reduces resonances. The basket is absolutely non-magnetic, which contributes to a higher efficiency of the driver.

A strong magnet combined with the light cone ensures high efficiency and a good transient response.
Heavy copper rings mounted above and below the T-shaped pole piece reduce non linear and modulation distortion and increase the overload margin.

The copper plating of the top and bottom plates along with a solid copper phase plug improves the heat conduction and thus contributes to the high power durability.

Gold-plated terminals reduce contact resistance and serve as anti-corrosion.
Large windows in the basket both above and below the spider reduces sound reflections, air flow noise and cavity resonances.

Woofer driver:

The bass driver is also a Seas unit, but a classic coated-paper cone type, well known for its performance at a very good price/performance ratio. The coated paper membrane is very light, yet rigid with a minimum of resonances and a controlled roll off.

The rubber suspension ensures that edge resonances are suppressed. The cast basket is a high flow type with very good precision. The construction is very stable and completely non magnetic to obtain high efficiency. A powerful magnet, paired with the light cone provides good transient response.

Crossover:

The crossover is built up with massive air-coils, low tolerance high quality capacitors and MOX resistors. It’s a 2.5 way technology, with the Seas Excel running all the way down, the Seas woofer working up to 600Hz. It’s a quite tricky crossover-topology, but, if done right, it allows a perfect compromise between efficiency, bass extension and impedance load.

The development of the improved MKII version has been a real challenge for our technicians: usually these 2,5-way systems have serious problems with phase response, which is clearly audible, and results in a kind of “muddy” midrange performance. In this special case our developers adopted a quite unconventional solution, which it took an enormous amount of time to develop, but (at the end) it turned out as a solution, we would call “near to perfect”!
It would be definitely interesting to see how many other companies invest a similar amount of energy (and money) to develop a single speaker. Well, in any case, we didn’t stop until we were not completely convinced!

The crossover between tweeter and mid-woofer is very similar to the 99.26MKII filter, as we wanted them to be a perfect match, for example in a home cinema application. The same, steeper filters for tweeter and mid are adopted, which guarantees excellent phase matching, extremely flat frequency response and stable imaging.

There are tuning options included to enable you to adjust the tweeter/bass level to match your listening room and preferences.

Binding post:

The tri-wiring connectors are gold-plated and you can connect to the amplifier with double cables (bi-wiring), or connect to two amplifiers (bi-amping) for further improving the sound.

Room Tuning - Mechanical boundary frequency control

By using the supplied bass reflex plugs, it is possible to mechanically alter the lower boundary frequency on XTZ 99.36MKII.
This, in combination with adjustments through the jumpers, leads to a nearly infinite possibility of room corrections!
With all ports closed the speaker behaves as a classical “closed box”, or sealed construction.
